Nancy Tilton - Director of Education

Nancy Tilton is an educator and founder of ALC Mosaic. After working in public schools in Maryland and North Carolina and a small private Friends school in Charlotte, Nancy set out to start her own school. Inspired by the traditions of democratic schools and unschooling, she started The Mosaic School in August of 2013. After connecting with the first ALC in NYC, The Mosaic School became ALC Mosaic and the first major collaborator in the ALC Network in 2014.

 

Lacy Arnold Manship - Member, Board of Directors

Lacy Arnold Manship a founding community member, former Director and currently a Lead Facilitator and Board Member at ALC Mosaic. Her interests are in respectful communication with young children, creating play spaces, natural literacy development, connection to the natural world and critical literacies as a tool for social change. She writes about and tinkers with these ideas as a facilitator and director of Roots, Mosaic’s early childhood program.

 

Kit Hadlund - Member, Board of Directors

Kit Hadlund is a trainer, consultant, and process facilitator in the ways of Restorative Justice and Conflict Transformation. Kit is also the connected father to 2 beautiful boys, and descended from Nordic and Irish traditions. Kit holds a B.A. from DePaul University in International Studies, an M.A. from SIT in Peace and Justice Leadership, and Professional Certificates in Advanced Youth Development, and Social Justice Mediation. Kit uses these gifts and experiences to facilitate processes of repair, healing, and accountability within schools, organizations, and communities. He has been called to do this work by his ancestors, and always looks forward to bringing people together in the hope of healing, justice, and compassion.

Amber Irvin - Director, High School & School House Mngr

Amber Irvin is the Director of the High School program and the School House Manager at ALC Mosaic. After working in early childhood education in Virginia and North Carolina for 5 years, Amber spent a few years in Charlotte working in community engagement and with people experiencing homelessness. Amber joined ALC Mosaic as a Facilitator in 2018 and Director of the Branches program a year later. Her focus is on supporting young people in navigating self-directed education, promoting everyday adventures, and providing opportunities for community engagement.

 

Jason Polk - Member, Board of Directors

Jason Polk joined the ALC community in 2015 and is a father to three inspiring individuals currently attending the school. He enjoys being active, taking hikes, reading, and learning new things. The concept of self-directed learning speaks strongly to him, and he's thoroughly enjoyed seeing it's manifestation in the children at ALC Mosaic. When Jason is not with his family or exploring his interests, he is a risk manager in the financial industry, focused on responsibly expanding access to credit.

Tomis Parker - Director of Operations

Tomis Parker has been facilitating in and/or developing Self-Directed Education environments since 2009. He helped birth the first ALC in NYC and served as the Director for three years. He now lives in Charlotte, NC where he serves as the Director of Operations. He is passionate about sharing the ALC model, building bridges to and through the work of Self-Directed Education, and supporting communities where people are trusted to create a better world.

 

Joe Zupancic - Member, Board of Directors

Joe Zupancic is a parent in the community and a true believer that children should have the right to explore what interests them the most. Over the last 13 years Joe has volunteered at various educational co-ops, youth organizations, and in athletics. A 20-year veteran in the SaaS industry Joe is driven to make work life better so that people have more time with their loved ones. Joe is most proud that at Mosaic from children to adults everyone is actively engaged in self-directed education.
